  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Cochlear implants let patients with inner ear deafness (re) gain auditory sensation by direct electric stimulation of the auditory nerve, when hearing aids are not effective. The method through which sounds are converted into a pattern of electric stimuli is called speech coding strategy, which has been improved unremittingly to code both spectral and temporal information efficiently. Consequently, cochlear implant users can recognize speech almost completely if it is a person-to-person conversation under quiet situation.
