The hippocampus plays critical roles in the formation of learning and memory, and the efficacy of hippocampal excitatory synaptic transmission is dynamically regulated, depending on the frequency of synaptic activation. Long-term potentiation (LTP) of excitatory synaptic transmission, which is usually induced by high-frequency activation of synapses, has extensively been examined as a cellular model for learning and memory.
