HIV脳炎はHIV感染による病気である。神経病理所見は単球・マクロファージ由来の多核巨細胞が主に灰白質直下の白質小皿管周囲に認められるのが特徴である。ウイルスはこの細胞とミクログリアに検出され，神経細胞には認められないことから，HIV蛋白やサイトカインなどが神経細胞障害の原因と考えられている。最近話題となっているHIVのコレセプターであるケモカインレセプターやウイルスの特徴および発症機序，そしてサル動物モデルにおけるHIV脳炎の知見についてまとめた。

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection to humans, followed by various kinds of opportunistic infection and opportunistic tumor occur in the patients with AIDS. HIV infection directly causes HIV encephalitis. Characteristic neuropathological finding is the presence of multinucleated giant cells (MGC) originated from blood-borne monocyte/macrophage appearing perivascular area at white matter just beneath gray matter and basal ganglia.
