HES 1, a negative helix-loop-helix (HLH) gene expressed by retinal progenitor cells, inhibits neuronal differenti-ation. In HES 1-null retina, neuronal differentiation was accelerated : Rod and horizontal cells appeared premature-ly and formed abnormal rosette-like structures. Thus, HES 1 keeps retinal progenitor cells from premature differ-entiation and regulates eye morphogenesis. Another HLH gene, Mash 1, is also transiently expressed during retinal development. In the absence of Mash 1, differentiation of late-appearing neurons was delayed, indicating that Mash 1 promotes neuronal differentiation in the retina.
