Neural development consists of three major steps: (1) proliferation of neural stem cells, (2) neurogenesis, and (3) gliogenesis. It has been shown that all these steps are regulated by basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) factors. Re-pressor-type bHLH factors regulate proliferation of neural stem cells and gliogenesis while activator-type bHLH factors promote neurogenesis. Antagonistic regulation between these repressor-and activator-type bHLH factors determines the timing of differentiation and the number of each type of cells. These bHLH factors may be useful for regeneration of neural tissues.
