  • Look Inside

Interferons (IFNs) are a family of secretory proteins that exert antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunoregulatory functions in a variety of target cells. An active interaction between the immune system and the central nervous system plays a role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). This concept supports a therapeutic rationale for a battery of immunomodulatory agents in MS. Recent clinical trials have shown that recombinant human IFN-β was effective in reducing exacerbations and activeMRI lesions in relapsing-remitting MS, while IFN-γ precipitated acute relapses (Neurology 37:1097, 1987 & 43 : 655, 1993).
