  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Argyrophilic grain dementia (AGD) or argyrophilic grain disease is a progressive form of dementia occurring in elderly subjects, first proposed by Braak & Braak. It is characterized by prominent argyrophilic and tau-positive spindle or comma-shaped granular structures (grains) in the neuropil of the hippocampal region and related limbic area. Grains, however, are also reported to be found occasionally in cases of Alzheimer-type dementia, Pick's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy and other diseases.
