Excitatory amino acids (EAA) play a crucial role in several brain disorders. These disorders include ischemia, hypoxia, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, AIDS-related dementia and several forms of tolerance phenomena. Extracellularly accumulated EAA during these conditions may trigger neuronal degenera-tion by promoting excessive calcium influx through N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor channels. Since the activation of NMDA receptors promotes a release of nitric oxide (NO) , it is hypothesized that NO may be a mediator of the excitotoxicity.
