  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Athetosis and dystonia were reviewed from historical standpoint, especially on their early descriptions, and the relations of these concepts were discussed. The term 'chorea' was coined by Paracelsus to denote St. Vitus dance, but it became widely used not only in its original disease, but also in other peculiar involuntary movements. 'Athetosis' was the term made by Hammond in 1871, which means a group of involuntary movements different from chorea, while dystonia was coined by Oppenheim in 1911, on peculiar abnormal posture.
