  • Look Inside

Functional neurosurgery for movement disorders was commenced by Sir Victor Horsley (1909), who excised the precentral gyrus of the cerebral cortex in a patient with violent hemiathetosis. Horsley further contributed to the functional surgery by developing animal stereotactic frame with Clarke (1908). Intervention of the pyramidal tract had been advocated to cease involuntary movements until late of 1930s, when Russell Meyers first challenged basal ganglia surgery by using a transventricular approach. In 1947 Spiegel and Wycis developed a stereotactic apparatus for humans.
