  • Look Inside

Serotonergic neurons of the brain stem raphe nuclei form extensive networks throughout the central nervous system and function in the control of a diversity of physiological and behavioral activities. Serotonin (5-HT) has a predominantly excitatory action on motoneurons located at various levels of the neuraxis. There is evidence that orofacial motoneurons (facial, trigeminal and hypoglossal) are facilitated by 5-HT. In this connection, we have demonstrated that inspiratory laryngeal motoneurons located in the nucleus ambiguus are excited by microinjection of 5-HT.
