  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Non-invasive treatment for trigeminal neuralgia can be demarcated into a number of well-defined groups: (1) Drug therapy, (2) Peripheral nerve blocks, (3) Gasserian ganglion block including (a) alcohol and (b) phenol glycerine, and (c) radiofrequency coagulation method.

(1) Drug therapy: The most useful drugs available in this respect is carbamazepine (Tegretol) which has been found to have a specific effect in trigeminal neuralgia. It is an anticonvulsant and in trigeminal neuralgia a starting dose of 100 mg t.d.s. is used and this can be increased to 200 mg q.d.s. if the pain is not controlled on the lower dose.
