  • Look Inside

Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is the suspected etiologic agent of adult T cell leukemia and the neurological disorder, HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis. The search for the virus component mediating transformation has focussed on the tax gene, whose products not only stimulate viral transcription and replication but also trans-activate transcription of several cellular genes. To directly examine the pathological effects of the tax gene in vivo, transgenic mice expressing the tax gene under control of the HTLV-I long terminal repeat (LTR) promoter were produced.
