  • Look Inside

Neuropeptide Y(NPY)is the most potent central chemical stimulant of feeding known in a variety of vertebrate species. NPY has been shown to affect diverse physiological functions including effects on metabolism, blood pressure, anxiety, body temperature, circadian rhythm, memory as well as gastrointestinal motility. Recently its effect to induce the NPY activates at least six receptor subtypes, Y1-y6, and NPY analogs as well as PYY and PP exhibit varying degrees of affinity and specificity for these Y receptors. Newly developed gene knockout or transgenic techniques are the powerful tool to analyze the function of each receptor subtype. In this report, we describe the various functions of each NPY receptor subtype and discuss about the therapeutic meaning of receptor agonist and antagonist.
