  • Look Inside

Motor neuron disease inclusion dementia(MNDID)is a group of diseases commonly accompanying peculiar tau-negative, ubiquitin-positive inclusions(UI)and motor neuron involvement. MNDID is composed of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS-D), the majority of lobar atrophy(Pick's disease)without Pick body[LA-PB(-)]and a small portion of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS). Motor neuron involvement in each disease entity characterize as follows. The lower motor neuron is predominantly involved in ALS-D, while the upper motor neuron is predominantly involved but in various degree in a considerable number of patients with LA-PB(-). In ALS, upper and lower motor neuron are usually involved, however, considerable portion of ALS shows lower motor neuron predominant involvement. Almost ALS patients with UI show degeneration in rostral part of the parahippocampal region and/or the border zone between the hippocampal CA1 and subiculum, which is known as a most vulnerable portion in of ALS-D. The boundary among these diseases is not always clear and a significant number of cases are considered to be the transitional form. Nevertheless, MNDID seems to be a common disease group extended over between Pick's disease and ALS.
