In Japan Microsporum canis infection of man has been reported mainly in Hokkaido district, especially in and around Sapporo City. Rare cases have been reported in Tokyo since 1952.

Familial occurence of M. canis infection in all five members of one family living in Tokyo was reported. They were a 19-year-old girl, a 17-year-old boy, 41-year-old mother, an 18-year-old boy and father, and the skin manifestetions appeared in this order within 10 days.

The clinical pictures were almost the same and composed of sharply marginated round, itchy, azuki- to pea-sized erythemato-squamous lesions on the face, neck, chest, extremities and knee. Many hyphae of the fungus were found in the scales. the fungus from the scales of all patients and from the hairs and scales of a pet cat was identified with M. canis. The cat had been sent from Sapporo 8 days before the skin manifestations appeared in the first case.
