  • Look Inside

Contagious pustular dermatitis is a benign viral infection of sheep and goats. It affects man through contagion and makes a small pox-like pustule. Reports of this disease from veri-ous countries where sheep and goats are fed can be found. In Japan the endemies among sheep have been reported, but a human infection can not be found in literature. In fact it might occur not infrequently in Japan.

When the endemic infection of this virus among sheep occurred in a stock-farm in Takigawa City, one veterinarian and two pasture employees were infected. They had a solitary small pox-like pustule on the finger or forearm, which was cured in 2 to 4 weeks. Phenoxy-ethyl penicillin was not effective, but tetracycline could prevent secondary infection and shorten the course.

Histopathology of the pustule showed a bulla formation with vacuolization and nuclear pyknosis of keratinocytes and an inflammatory infiltrate composed mainly of lymphocytes in the upper dermis.
