A 1 year and 6 months old boy with chronic otitis media presented with ear discharge in the right ear and treated with antibiotics for 2 months.

His tympanic membrane was bulging and his ear canal was remarkably injected. A lurge amount of serous ear discharge was observed and soon the earcanal was filled with granuloma.

At the operation a big and long piece of foreign body was found in the tympanic cavity, and granuloma was filled in the tympanic cavity and surrounded the foreign body.

The malleus and incus were found in the ear canal.

After operation it was revealed that he was play-ing with a chopstick in his mouth and fell to the ground. After this episode he developed ear dis-charge.

The foreign body in the tympanic cavity was rare and there were only two cases previously reported in Japan.
