  • Look Inside

A 75-year-old patient with poorly differenciated squamous cell carcinoma of the left maxillary sinus, developed lung metestasis after chemothe-rapy and radiotherapy (50 Gy). Blood examina-tions showed leukocytosis and marked increase of the numbers of mature granulocytes, and marked increase of the activity of G-CSF both in plasma and in pleural effusion was proved. Lung metastasis progressed rapidly. Malignant tumors that secrete colony stimulating factors are reported to have unique characteristics, as follows. 1) Poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma is pathologically dominant. 2) Easy metastasis.3) Poor prognosis. The tumor of this patient was suggested to secrete G-CSF, and our clinical data suggests that the secretion of growth factor may be related to the production of metastatic lesions.
