We reviewed 40 cases of keratomycosis during the past 20 years. It was caused by ocular injury by vegetable material in 20 cases. In 17 of the other 20 cases, it was due to Candida sp. which is present as normal flora in the skin and the intestines. The findings show that keratomycosis is to be classified into two typical types : vegetable and normal flora types. The former is triggered by injury due to vegetable material and is refractive to antibiotics or corticosteroids. Fusarium sp. is the most frequent causative organism. The latter is preceded by topical or systemic immunosufficiency as after heavy medication following penetrating keratoplasty. The latter is thus to be regarded as an instance of opportunistic infection.
