  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We studied 60 intraocular lenses (IOLs) which had to be explanted using scanning electron micros-copy. Explantation was necessitated by bullous keratopathy 26 cases, displacement of IOL 14, protracted uveitis 13, correction of refraction 4 and traumatic IOL dislocation 3. The series comprised28 PMMA and 3 silicone posterior chamber IOLs and 29 anterior chamber IOLs.

IOLs with prior protracted uveitis showed numer-ous activated macrophages and fibroblast-like cells adherent to the surface. There was a tendency for the number of inflammatory cells to gradually decrease after 3 months following surgery in the other IOL specimens.
