Photorefractive surgery was performed on 27 eyes of forme fruste keratoconus. Laser in situ keratomile-usis (LASIK) was performed on 25 eyes and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) on 2 eyes. At 3 to 32 months after surgery, the final uncorrected visual acuity was 20/20 or over in 21 eyes (78%). In order to obtain data for long-term prognosis, we measured the anterior displacement of posterior corneal surface after LASIK using a corneal to-pographic analyzer. The value was significantly greater in 13 eyes of forme fruste keratoconus than in 12 uncompli-cated myopic normal eyes (p=0.01). In forme fruste keratoconus, the anterior displacement was greater in eyes with thinner residual stroma and also in eyes with greater ablation or myopic correction. The findings show that LASIK is not advocated for forme fruste keratoconus because of potential risks on long-term basis.
