We studied the possible association between subconjunctival hemorrhage and glaucoma. The cases comprised 131 cases of subconjunctival hemorrhage and 125 age-matched healthy persons. Diagnosis of glaucoma was based on the following criteria. Closed-angle glaucoma was diagnosed by intraocular pressure (IOP), darkroom prone test and gonioscopy. Open-angle glaucoma was diagnosed by IOP including provocative tests, disc cupping and visual field. In the group of subconjunctival hemorrhage, 14cases were diagnosed as glaucoma and 23 as glaucoma suspect. In the control group, 1 case was diagnosed as glaucoma and 8 as glaucoma suspect. The difference in the two groups was significant (P<0.001). In the group of subconjunctival hemorrhage, the incidence of glaucoma was higher in recurrent cases than in first-onset ones (p<0.001), the incidence in the cases without inducing factors was higher than these with such factors (p<0.002). The findings show that there is a high correlation between subconjunctival hemorrhage and glaucoma.
