  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We observed two cases of orbital tumor which proved later to be due to acute myelocytic leukemia (AML).The first case, a 15-year-old girl presented with proptosis in her right eye. She was diagnosed with inflammatorypseudotumor of the orbit. After responding well to systemic corticosteroid, it recurred 3 weeks after end of treatment.Malignant lymphoma was suspected by biopsy. Radiotherapy induced clinical cure. She developed abdominal tumor 6years later. Biopsy of ascites and hematological studies led to the diagnosis of AML (FAB classification:M2).Reexamination of biopsied specimen 6 years before proved to be orbital chloroma. The other case, a 2-year-old male infant, presentedwith bilateral proptosis. Computed tomography showed tumorous mass invading the cranial and facial bones constrictingthe optic nerves. Neurosurgical excision led to the diagnosis of chloroma as manifestation of AML (FAB classification: M3). Both cases initially lacked systemic features of AML. These cases illustrate that orbital tumor in juveniles may bechloroma and that hematological examinations are imperative in such cases.
