  • Look Inside

We reviewed 50 eyes of 50 patients who underwent vitreous surgery for macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion during 4 years through 1999. The series comprised branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) 27 eyes and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) 23 eyes. Final visual acuity after more than 1 year after surgery significantly improved in both groups. It was significantly better in BRVO than CRVO. Final visual acuity was better in cases operated within 1 month after occurrence and was better in cases aged less than 65 years (p< 0.05) . Photocoagulation prior to vitreous surgery did not affect the final visual acuity. The findings show that early vitreous surgery is beneficial for macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion.
