Abstract Purpose: To report the effect of intravitreal injection of aflibercept(IVA)in patients with macular edema(ME)following central retinal vein occlusion(CVO).

Cases and methods: Retrospective case series. Twenty one eyes of 21 Japanese patients with ME following CVO received 2 mg IVA(13 cases of treatment naïve, 8 cases that were switched from bevacizumab). Cases were followed up for 6 months. The main outcomes are best corrected visual acuity(BCVA;log MAR)and central retinal thickness(CRT).

Results: Base line BCVA and CRT were 0.72 and 727.2μm respectively. At months 6, BCVA had significantly improved to 0.43, and CRT decreased to 333.2μm compared to base line(p<0.01). The average number of IVA was 3.1 times. ME disappeared with 95% of patients. Recurrence of edema occurred within 2-3 month after injection in 67% of patients.

Conclusion: Intravitreal injection of aflibercept was effective treatment for ME following CVO. Careful follow up is required due to frequent recurrence.
