  • Look Inside

We developed a noncontact corneal aesthesiometer by modifying a noncontact tonometer. It showed a high reliability in repeated measurements in normal volunteers. It showed a high correlation in corneal sensitivity values with Cochet-Bonnet corneal aesthesiometer. The corneal sensitivity was higher in 18 young persons (mean age: 23.7) than in 23 aged persons (mean age: 61.9). The threshold value of corneal sensitivity in 23 diabetic persons (mean age: 61.9) was higher by 40% than in aged-matched healthy persons. It was also higher by 30% in 9 contact lens wearers (mean age: 22.9) than in aged-matched healthy persons. The present apparatus thus shows a high reliability in obtained values under variable but constant air stimulation, and an accurate target orientation by realtime monitoring.
