We measured the exophthalmometric values in 650 Japanese people using an exophthalmometer by Hertel. The series comprised three groups. 1) 400 normal adults, 200 men and 200 women, without severe myopia of -7 diopters or more. The ages ranged from 16 to 70 years. 2 ) 200 children, 100 boys and 100 girls, without severe myopia. The ages ranged from 4 to 15 years. 3) 50 adults, 15 men and 15 women, with myopia of more than -7 diopters. The ages ranged from 16 to 70 years.

The protrusion values in group 1 averaged 15.3 mm in men and 15.1 mm in women. These values were greater by 2 mm than the reported values prior to 1940. The mean protrusion values in myopic adults averaged 15.6 mm in men and 15.4 mm in women. These values did not significantly differ from those in group 1. There was no individ-ual who manifested difference in values in both eyes greater than 1.5 mm. The distance between the lateral orbital rims averaged 103.9 mm in men and 98.6 mm in women.
