  • Look Inside

Two premature infants developed ocular infec-tion by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). A male infant was born at 24 weeks of gestation and weighted 588 g. He developed se-pticemia by MRSA and Candida on day 77 after birth. Retinopathy of prematurity became apparent on day 81. Total retinal detachment with massive vitreous hemorrhage developed, in spite of cryopex-y, on day 93. Endophthalmitis developed in the left eye on day 104 necessitating enucleation 4 days later. MRSA was isolated from the eyeball.

A female infant was born as a member of triplet at 33 weeks of gestation and weighed 1780 g. Epi-phora and discharge developed from day 10 on. The condition was diagnosed as bilateral dacryocystitis. MRSA was isolated from the discharge. The clini-cal outcome was favorable.
