Abstract Purpose:We report the effect of lowering intraocular pressure and postoperative complications of trabeculectomy(TLE)with mitomycin C(MMC).

Subjects and methods:Five hundred and twenty-nine eyes from 455 patients who could be followed for more than 6months after surgery were reviewed from the clinical charts. Death is defined as having undergone additional surgery after having intraocular pressure above 18 mmHg twice or more in Criterion 1, or having intraocular pressure exceeding 15 mmHg twice or more in Criterion 2, regardless of the use of glaucoma treatments.

Results:Each type of glaucoma showed a significantly decreased intraocular pressure(p<0.01)during the observational period. The 3-year survival rate was 86.3% for Criterion 1 and 68.4% for Criterion 2. The complications frequently occurred in steroid-induced, childhood, primary angle closure, and neovascular glaucoma. The frequent complications included hyphema and choroidal detachment.

Conclusion:The surgical results of TLE with MMC was fairly satisfactory.
