Abstract Purpose:Retinoscopy is one of the most useful techniques to measure refractive errors objectively as it can be applied to various cases. However, it has limitations because the measurement requires technical competence. The aim of this study is to show clinical usefulness of a smartphone-based retinoscopy.

Materials and Methods:We created a frame that fixed a smartphone(iPhone 6S, Apple)to a retinoscope(NEITZ streak retinoscope RX-RC, NEITZ). A cover was attached to the frame such that the eyepiece of the retinoscope aligned with the center of the camera. Retinoscopy was performed on a schematic eye and eyes of a patient with hyperopic anisometropia. Images were captured by a camera application on the smartphone.

Results:The attachment was assembled at low cost and in a short period of time, and it was able to attach and detach easily from the retinoscope. It allowed qualitative assessment of light movements(“with”, “neutral”, “against”), brightness and thickness of the light that changes according to refractive errors. Adjunctive use of correcting lenses further enabled quantitative measurement of refractive errors.

Conclusions:The smartphone-based retinoscopy effectively recorded clear retinoscopic images that allowed quantitative measurements of refractive errors. This could contribute to education, clinical consultations, and routine examinations for children's eyes.
