Abstract Background:Infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa is usually associated to medical history such as surgery, use of contact lens, or compromised host.

Purpose:To report an otherwise healthy adult who showed conjunctivitis due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa with baring of the sclera due to melting of the bulbar conjunctiva.

Case:A 30-year-old healthy female presented with pain in the right eye, swelling of eyelids, hyperemia and discharge since 3 days before. She had been receiving topical and systemic antibiotics since the follwing day.

Findings and Clinical Course:Opening of the right eyelid was almost impossible even by force, due to swelling and pain. Subconjunctival hemorrhage, hyperemia and profuse discharge were also present. Symptoms became less severe the following day. The right eye showed baring of the sclera due to melting of the conjunctiva superior to the cornea. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated from the discharge. Treatment with topical and systemic antibiotics was followed by heal of conjunctivitis 2 weeks later. There was no pathological finding by systemic observations.

Conclusion:This case illustrates that conjunctivitis by Pseudomonas aeruginosa may develop in an apparently healthy adult.
