Abstract Purpose:To present a four-year review of eye surgery, including retinal detachment surgery, at the Toyama Prefectural Central Hospital.

Cases and Method:We reviewed cases of eye surgery performed during 4 years through 2016. They were evaluated according to year, month, and causative disease.

Results:A total of 145 surgeries were performed for retinal detachment during the 4 years. There were 42, 27, 27 and 49 surgeries respectively for 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. There was a tendency for retinal detachment surgery to be more performed in May and October. Overtime work for ophthalmologists tended to increase in months with greater number of eye surgeries.

Conclusion:The data of Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfarl and our data seemed to suggest that the incidence of retinal detachment is close to two cases per 10,000 inhabitants in Japan. Overtime work for ophthalmologists is expected to decrease if seasonal variation of emergency eye surgery can be predicted.
