Abstract Purpose:To present a review of cases of endophthalmitis who were treated by vitreous surgery.

Cases:This study was made on 13 eyes of 13 cases that developed infectious endophthlmitis from 2006 through 2018 in Kansai Medical University Hospital. The series comprised 10 males and 3 females. The age ranged from 6 to 89 years, average 58 years. The initial surgery included cataract surgery 7 eyes and vitreous surgery 4 eyes among others. All the 13 cases received vitreous surgery for endophthalmitis.

Findings:Final visual acuity was 0.5 or better in 6 cases and less than 0.4 in 7 cases, including 3 cases who became blind. Some cases with poor visual outcome had ocular diseases including age-related macular degeneration, end-stage glaucoma, central retinal vein occlusion or retinitis pigmentosa. Other cases had systemic diseases including atopic dermatitis, renal failure, Down syndrome or dementia. Ocular pain at the onset of endophthalmitis was more manifest in cases with poor visual outcome than the rest. After treatment with vitreous surgery, the fundus became visible after longer duration in cases with poor visual outcome than the rest.

Conclusion:Vitreous surgery for postoperative endophthalmitis resulted in fair visual outcome when the cases were free of ocular or systemic diseases.
