Abstract Purpose:To report the significance of fundus examination during prescription of contact lens

Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 16,452 cases who sought prescription of contact lens in an eye clinic. The series comprised 5,130 males and 11,322 females. The age ranged from 9 to 84 years and averaged 36 years. All the cases received routine ophthalmological examinations including fundus examination.

Results:Disorder of the fundus was detected in 39 cases(0.23%). Cases who had been diagnosed elsewhere were not included in the present study. There were 7 cases of epiretinal membrane, 4 cases of hereditary retinal dystrophy, 3 cases of macular degeneration, 2 cases of retinal break, 2 cases of branch retinal vein occlusion, and one case each of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, macular hole, and hypertensive retinopathy. There were 9 cases of open-angle glaucoma and 8 cases of optic neuropathy including 5 cases of optic atrophy.

Conclusion:Fundus examination is a significant method in screening hitherto undetected fundus disorders.
