ネパールにおける眼科の集団治療—ネパールの民族と歴史（その1）

まえがき

　今から5年前，1962年にインドのニュー・デリーで行なわれた国際眼科学会に出席した後，ネパール政府の招きで，ネパールの主都カトマンズーを訪れ，約1カ月半にわたり眼の集団診療を行ない，3927名の検診と，白内障を主として338名の手術を行なつた。ここにその結果を報告して，参考に資したいと思う。

　われわれ日本人が他国に行き，検診を行なうとともに手術をするということは，並々ならぬものがある。そして，その結果について報告する場合に，日本人の感覚から事象を判断することは許されないことで，その国の歴史，住民，習慣，社会制度を知つたうえでないと，すべては理解できないと思う。ましてネパールは，ここ10数年前まで完全に鎖国し，世界の謎とされていた国であり，日本の北海道の2倍といつた狭い地区に1千万の住民が住み，人種的にみて，チベット系住民，インド系住民が入り混り，アジアの人種展覧会場といえるほど多種多様な民族が住み，しかも彼らはヒンズー教のもとにカースト制度を守り，互いに交流せず，独立してそれぞれの生活を古代から現代までも守りつづけているのである。

The present author was engaged in active ophthalmological mission in Katmandu for 6 weeks in 1962. A total of 3,927 patients were examined during the above period. Operation was performed on 338 eyes with cataract or other eye diseases. The activity of the mission proved highly successful according to the eva-luation of the author. The author notcd a stri-king similarity in the mentality of the people, social structure and the religious conditions of present Nepal and medieval Japan : important circumstances that contributed to the above success.
