  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We evaluated the corneal astigmatism in 23 eyes with pterygium before and one month after surgery. We used photokeratoscopy in the evaluation.

Before surgery, we found with-the-rule corneal astigmatism amounting 2.8±2.1 diopters. This astigmatism was due to flattening of midperipheral cornea adjacent to the pterygium. The amount of astigmatism and the size of the pterygium waspositively correlated, with the correlation coeffi-cient of 0.764.

The astigmatism was markedly reduced one month after surgical removal of pterygium to 0.3± 0.8 diopter.

It appeared that pterygium exerted traction along the horizontal meridian of the cornea, result-ing in with-the-rule astigmatism.
