We evaluated the retinal sensitivity in 18 eyes with diabetic retinopathy using an automated perimeter (Octopus). All the eyes manifested capil-lary non-perfused areas when seen by fluorescein angiography. The type of retinopathy was classified as simple in 2 eyes, preproliferative in 12, and proliferative in 4. The visual acuity was 0.6 in 2 eyes and 1.0 in the other 16 eyes.
We divided the posterior fundus into four regions : central area within 5° from the fovea, ring-shaped area between 5° and 15° from the fovea (area II), and an outer zone between 15° and 30° from the fovea (area III). Area III was further divided into temporal and nasal halves (area III temporal and nasal). On the fluorescein angiogram, the extent ofcapillary non-perfusion was minimal in central area and increased in area II, area III temporal and III nasal in the ascending order.
We used program 31 and 32 in evaluating the retinal sensitivity. Decrease in retinal sensitivity was not correlated with the extent of capillary non-perfusion in the retinal area within 15ー from the fovea. The correlation between decrease in retinal sensitivity and capillary non-perfusion was good in area III temporal and was fair in area III nasal. While the degree of impaired retinal sensitivity was variable, a relatively steep depression was present along the border between perfused and non-per-fused retinal area.
