  • Look Inside

We performed a joint study over the etiological and clinical characteristics in viral conjunctivitis in Sapporo and Manila during the 13-month period through November 1985. A total of 464 cases, 314 in Sapporo and 150 in Manila, were evaluated. The etiological diagnosis was based, as a rule, on isolation of viral organism from the conjunctival swabs of the patients at the first visit. The virus could be isolated in 147 cases (47%) in Sapporo and in 62 cases (41%) in Manila. Adenovirus type 3, 4, 9, 19 and 37 was found both in Sapporo and Manila. Additionally, adenovirus type 1, 35 and HSV-1 was found in Sapporo only. Adenovirus type 7,11 and CA24 was found in Manila only. In cases with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, adenovirus type 8, 19, and 37 were predominant in Sapporo, while Adenovirus type 8 was the common etiological agent in Manila.
