  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We evaluated the possible relationship between the incidence of allergic conjunctivitis and the number of pollens of Japanese cedar floating in the air. A total of 3,744 patients with allergic conjunctivitis were analyzed based on reports from practising ophthalmologists in Chiba Prefecture during a 40-month period through April, 1985. Concurrently, the airborne pollens were counted during the same period.

There was a preponderance of females over males at the ratio of 3 : 2. Subjects under 20 years of age tended to manifest allergic conjunctivitis. Though the peak occurrence of allergic conjunctivitis differed for each year, there was a definite parallelism between the pollen count and the incidence and timing of allergic conjunctivitis. Our findings seemed to suggest that the allergic conjunctivitis can be predicted on the basis of airborne pollen count.
