Episcleral lipid deposits and scleral plaques in Japan (Kyoto)

　脂質沈着lipid depositsとは上強膜あるいは結膜下に存在する球状体で，特に前毛様血管の周囲に認められる。日本人189名中52％に脂質沈着を認めた。この頻度は，デンマークの白人，グリーンランドのエスキモー，ヨルダンのアラブ人の頻度を上まわるものである。

　Scleral plaqueとは強膜表層の境界明瞭な透明体で水平筋付着部の前方に認められる。日本人189人中0.5％にしかみられなかった。Scleral plaqueは白人の間ではよくみられるがエスキモーではまれである。

　両現象の頻度に地理的な差ができる原因につき考察した。

A consecutive series of 189 Japanese with scleral degenerations were evaluated as to the presence of lipid deposits, particularly round the anterior ciliary vassels. Episcleral lipid deposits were present in 52% : an incidence which is higher in those among Caucasians in Denmark (N = 689), Eskimos in Greenland (N=340) and Arabs in Jordan (N=127) according to my earlier studies employing the same technique.

Scleral plaque, a well-defined transparancy an-terior to the horizontal muscles, was present in less than 0.5% of the present series. This phenomenon is likewise rare among Eskimos but is frequent among Caucasians.
