We developed a new surgical technique to reat-tach the retina with the use of magnetic materials. Basically, the technique consists of inserting a fer-rous material into the vitreous cavity, guiding it to the site of the retina that needs to be reattached, and to let it remain in position by the force of a magnetic plate placed on the overlying sclera.

We chose permalloy metal as the ferrous material to be inserted into the vitreous. A coating with superhard glass was applied over the permalloy metal in order to make it inert and safe. We chose an oval-shaped ball of 2×2×3mm in size.
