糖尿病性網膜症の病因とその管理

Principles and clinical management or diabetic retinopathy

　糖尿病網膜症は人類および現代の医学にとって引き続き悲惨な病気の一つであり，糖尿病の頻度の増加とともに，いっそう大切な疾患となってきた。さらに問題は複雑でよい医学的管理によって糖尿病患者の寿命が伸びて，合併症がふえているからである。したがってますます多くの糖尿病と糖尿病網膜症が増加し，非常に大きな公衆衛生上の問題になりつつある。

　すでに光凝固は視力の維持に非常に有効であることは多くの研究が示している。これらの治療はとくに片眼が糖尿病網膜症で失なわれ，再発性の硝子体出血が起こり，増殖性の変化があり視力の低下が進行しているときには，必須である。しかも注意深く行なわれれば光凝固による危険は比較的少ない。しかし糖尿病はまだ引き続いて医学と眼科医にとって非常に大きな問題をかかえている。

Diabetic retinopathy continues to be one of the devastating diseases of man and modern medicine.It promises to become even more important in the future as greater numbers of diabetics are disco-vered. Furthermore, the problem is complicated by good medical control which results in greater longevity of the diabetic population. There will be more diabetics and they will live longer with the consequence that diabetic retinopathy will become a tremendous public health problem. Studies already indicate that photocoagulation does have value in preserving vision.
