The diffraction and light scattering of the cornea were studied, and the double lattice theory was presented to explain the transparency and clouding of the cornea.

The corneal stroma is consisted of the regularly arranged fibers, therefore, the cornea may be regarded as a diffraction grating. If a parallel beam is perpendiculary incident on the cornea, the diffraction spectra will appear. In fact, the clear spectra were observed with polarized light between crossed polaroids. The grating element distance was 13μ.

The light incident on the transparent cornea is transmitted mostly without deviation.
