大気汚染による石神井南中学校集団被害の眼症状について

Ocular Involvement during Air Pollution Crises in a Tokyo District

緒言

　1972年4月末より7月にかけて東京都下の多数の学校において，光化学スモッグによるといわれる集団被害があいついで発生し，テレビや新聞等で大きく報道された。中でも最も著しい被害が発生して休校せざるをえなくなつた練馬区石神井南中学校について，筆者らは被害の頭初より夏期休暇に至る約2カ月間，東京スモッグ対策研究プロジェクトチーム臨床医学的調査研究分科会（長岡滋委員長）に協力し，被害者の眼検診を行なう機会をえたのでその結果をここに報告する。

Repeated episodes of mass injury due to airpollution took place from May through July 1972 among students while attending Shakujii Minami Junior High School, Tokyo. Among the 775 enli-sted students, nearly 200 students developed eye and throat irritations. Thirteen students had to be hospitalized on account of severe symptoms such as dyspnea, cramp or swoon.

The ocular involvement appeared as simple conjunctivitis or superficial keratoconjunctivitis similar to those caused by chemical irritants. The symptoms usually disappeared within 24 hours but the corneal injuries often persisted for over a week.
