  • Abstract

A consecutive series of 768 cases with essen-tial hypertension has been followed up afteran interval of 6 to 10 years since the first examination including fundoscopy. Out of the 737 traced cases, the 5-year rate of survival for each group as classified according to the fundus finding was as follows : 94.7% for Group 0 , 92.2% for Group I, 75.2% for Group IIa, 70.2% for Group IIb, 60.9% for Group III and 0 (no survival) for Group IV. Out of the 198 cases that had died during the period, death by car-diovascular accident accounted for 148 cases (75%).
