The state of instability in the balancing of extraocular muscles (OMB) was studied on20 operated cases of strabismus without amb-lyopia. All cases had an initial visual acuity of more than 0.7 in each eye and underwent orthoptic treatment after the operation. Chief findings were :

1) Vertical imbalance increases in frequeny after the operation during an attempted ho-rizontal fusion. The frequency tended to decrease with the lapse of time after the operation.

2) The horizontal deviation as studied by prism cover test tended, after a period of individual fluctuation postoperatively, to de-crease in magnitude thereafter.
