Effect of Augenip (A watersoluble vitamin A substance) upon epithelial keratitis

I．緒言

　上皮性角膜炎Epithelial Keratitis （Frieden—wald^1），1952）とは，我国における，瀰漫性角膜表層炎（井上達七郎，1894）に相当するが，乾性角膜炎や兎眼性角膜炎なども包含し，角膜上皮の表層に1／10mm程度の大きさの不正円形ないし多角形の混濁をきたし，時には融合して斑状，文字状となり，日により出現部位が変化するが，病勢は一進一退しながら，長期にわたり存続する性質を有している。

　Augenin （救心製薬）は，食用人参DaucusCarota L．より精製分離したところの，ビタミンA作用（生物学的効力はビタミンA₁の1／2）を有する水溶性結晶で，化学的性質，赤外線および紫外線スペトルの上からみて，次の化学構造式を持つものと推定されている（石坂音治^2），1961）。

Friedenwald's epithelial keratitis is clinica-lly of frequent occurrence, persisting for weeks and months. Complete recovery from the disease seems to be rather rare.

Augenin is a water soluble vitamin A active substance extracted from Daucus carota L. by O. Ishizaka (1961) and has the same bio-logical effects as vitamin A. Augen in eye so-lution (Augenin 2500 IU aeqivalent in normal saline) was instilled into tne conjunctival sack 4 times daily with favorable results in 11 cases of epithelial keratitis.
