Abstract. Purpose:To report a case of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment resulting in good visual acuity in spite of persistent presence of submacular fluid. Case:A 32-year-old male presented with impaired visual field of recent onset. He had a history of surgery for retinal detachment in the left eye. Findings:Corrected visual acuity was 1.2 right and 1.5 left. The right eye showed retinal detachment in the lower hemisphere. Results:The right eye received scleral encircling and suturing of silicone sponge from 2 to 9 o'clock. The subretinal fluid was not drained. The subretinal fluid persisted for over one year, started to resolve 14 months and disappeared 19 months after surgery. Visual acuity remained 1.0 or over throughout. There has been no recurrence of retinal detachment for 28 months after surgery until present. Conclusion:This case illustrates that visual acuity may not be affected in spite of persistence of subretinal fluid after surgery for retinal detachment.
