Abstract. Purpose:To report a case of Nocardia infection following uneventful cataract surgery. Case:A 64-year-old male had received cataract surgery in the right eye 5 weeks before. The operated eye developed hyperemia, discharge and pain 3 weeks later. He was referred to us another 2 weeks later. Findings:Corrected visual acuity was 1.0 right and 1.2 left. The right eye showed, besides hyperemia and discharge, opening of corneolscleral wound and multiple subconjunctival abscess. The anterior chamber was free of inflammation. The fundus appeared normal. He was treated by topical instillation of 4 antimicrobial agent, and topical and systemic antifungal agent. Nocardia species was cultured 9 days later in the sample from the corneoscleral wound. The strain was sensitive particularly to tobramycin. The lesion started to improve another 5 days later until clinical cure 2 months after onset. Conclusion:This case illustrates that Nocardia infection may cause subconjunctival abscess following cataract surgery.
